Summary:
Angela admits to the narrator that Santiago was the one that took her virginity away, but it was weird because Angela and Santiago were never seen together. For Angela life has not been very fair, her mom beats her up a lot and her secret lover died. Pablo, her brother, also died and the family all moved to a different town. Everything was changing for Angela and she was not able to let go of the love she felt for a guy by the name of, Bayardo. She wrote one letter per week for seventeen years and sent them to him and every time her mom beat her, she cried because of the guy she loved not of the pain she felt while being hit. Nevertheless, one day while Angela is working, he appears in her work with some more weight and less hair. He puts down two suitcases which had one containing his clothes, and the other all of the letters she sent him organized by date and tied with a ribbon. What i found most surprisingly thought was that they were all unopened. Then later on in the story it is revealed that the Vicario brothers wanted to kill Santiago to respect their sister's honor since he took her virginity apparently. Santiago had no idea of what was going on and he was scared, then while walking home, the brothers stabbed him several times. However, he was still able to get up and got home and threw himself on the kitchen floor.
Quote:
"Mortally wounded three times, Santiago Nasar turned frontward again and leaned his back against his mother's door, without the slightest resistance, as if he only wanted to help them finish killing him by his own contribution" (Marquez).
Response:
I found it weird how Santiago was not resisting the Vicario brothers in any way. It makes it look as if he wanted to be killed. If it was me or any other person who wanted to live they would have done something to save themselves.

Santiago's Death :O!
Summary:
The Vicario brother's are serious about killing Santiago, they are looking for him everywhere. Even tough many know about the twin's plan to kill him, some find it hard to believe because they are known to be good people and nobody really pays any close attention to him. Colonel Lazaro Aponte then fins out about what is going on but he does nothing about it since he handled many fights the previous night. Then they are sent home with their knifes being taken away, but then they just got two new knifes and sharpened them. Pablo Vicario is also supposed to be marrying a woman by the name of Prudencia Cotes and she told him that the only reason she will marry him is beause he would not have kept his sister's honor by killing Santiago. As they left Prudencia's house, they went back to the milk shop to in which Clothilde Armenta tries to make them drunk by giving them rum, so they won't be able to do anything. Then that day Santiago appears dead and it is a mystery now especially because no one knows how he really died but everyone suspects that it was the Vicario brothers. Then they are placed in the local prison and then they were moved to the one in Riohacha.
Quote:
"Still, in reality it seemed that the Vicario brothers had done nothing right with a view to killing Santiago Nasar immediately and without any public spectacle, but had done much more than could be imagined to have someone to stop them from killing him, and they had failed" (Marquez).
Response:
This quote made me think a lot. First of all, it was in a context that made me wonder what it all meant. I put a lot of tought into it and finally i came to decide that the quote shows how no one else saw a reason into killing Santiago, but they wanted to do it either way. Therefore, no one really stopped them from killing Santiago. Or so people think they killed him.

How Santiago Was Said To Be Killed
Summary:
The book starts with the main character, Santiago Nasar waking up at 5.30 a.m. on the day he is going to be killed. He was born with his mom's sixth sense and with his dad's love of firearms. He is the only chills born into a family of convenience. As the first few pages of the book went on, it is stated that everyone know about Santiago's death. Apparently two men were waiting to kill him on this day and they were waiting for him at the local milk shop. The two men, Pedro Vicario and Pablo Vicario were in their wedding suits and with knifes who had newspaper around them and this was when everyone was going into the boat. Even though many knew of his death, others thought Santiago was not in any danger and everyone knew about what was going on except for Santiago. Luisa, Margot's mother who finds out that Angela Vicario is sent home because she is not a virgin anymore, wants to tell Placida about what is going to happen to Santiago, but someone else comes and tells her that Santiago has already been killed. It is also believed that Santiago had something to do with the whole Angela incident of being sent back home.
Quote:
"On the day they were going to kill him, Santiago Nasar got up at five-thirty in the morning to wait for the boat the bishop was coming on" (Marquez).
Response:
This quote is the opening sentence to the book. It shows foreshadowing and makes the reader wonder how and why was Santiago going to be killed. This is a great hook to involve the reader into the book and it leaves many question. A good author will leave the reader curious until the end.

The Continuation of Hip Hop
Summary:
In order to be in the Hip Hop business, you have to know how to dress, have many talents, but most importantly, a person needs to know a lot about music. Hip Hop is all based on music; the beats and the lyrics to go with the beats. Throughout this part of the book, Coleman Young, Detroit's Mayor, is mentioned. He was elected in 1973 and was a political figure up until 1973. Young was an African American male who showed great improvement in the nation especially since in that time era, there was still a lot of racism and segregation going on. Even after Young was done being part of the politics, the race of the police force was more than half of African Americans. With this being said, it is quite notable to say that Young made great changes in Detroit at that time. Other then talking about the wonders Young did, this section also talks about the two eras of rap music videos; the before-Hype and the after-Hype. Hype, a cameraman, knew how to capture people's beauty in their music videos. He often filmed them from low angles so that they could look large and make them seem as if they have more power or control. Hype did wonders with any artist, it did not matter who they were or what their gender was. Missy Elliot for example, had a round body and was not seen fit for the business of Hip Hop. Usually people expect really attractive people to be on top, but anyone should be on top if they have what it takes.
Quote:
"Her rotund body did not fit the conventional standards of pop beauty considered crucial in the marketing of female performers" (Watkins 213).
Reflection:
This quote shows the importance people put into a person's physical appearance. Artists are supposed to look certain ways in order to impress everyone. However, in reality no one's perfect so no one is ever going to be satisfied with what a person has and they even ask for more sometimes.

Film vs. Novel
During the film I noticed that there were major differences between the book and the movie. First of all in the book the doctor's name was Dr. Montague and in the movie his name changes to Dr. Markway. Eleanor's last name also changes from Vance to Lance. The film emphasizes on Eleanor the most and it has many signs that the house chose her. Like the book, the film showed a sign in a wall that said “welcome home Eleanor“, which was the first sign that showed that Eleanor was the chosen one. Eleanor at first was scared out of her mind at that house, but she soon realized that her mission was to help the souls. The souls were being haunted by the creator of the house, Crain, even though they were all already dead. The film started off with the doctor being accompanied by his two assistants, Mary and Todd. However Mary has an injury and they both leave to go to the hospital. Throughout the movie there's foreshadowing because there's like this ominous music every time something bad is about to happen. There was also a point in the movie in which Crain came out to try to attack Eleanor and they kept showing high angle shots and point of view shots. They showed how Eleanor saw him and then how he saw her. In the end of the film, Eleanor’s soul was taken by the children so she could be with them peacefully. Nevertheless, in the book Eleanor committed suicide.

What is Going to Happen Next?
Summary:
When Mrs. Montague got settled in the house she decided that she wanted to play a game known as Planchette which is similar to the Ouija Board. The only difference is that the Planchette writes out the answers and the Ouija Board gives letters so people can spell the answers out. While playing the game with Author, her driver she discovers the answers to many intriguing stuff. This then led her to discover that the chosen one is in fact, Eleanor. Now they have to find a way to protect Eleanor which will not be easy to accomplish. Eleanor can't even leave the house because the house won't even let that happen. Mrs. Montague however, is expected to leave by Monday since Arthur has to get back to teaching on Tuesday. All of the six inhabitants hear weird sounds and see weird things but there's never any visual proof of a paranormal activity. Then after getting through the whole book it leaves the reader, as in me, wondering what really did happen? It's like an unsolved mystery making the story have no true ending.
Quote:
"Planchette, he went on after a moment, is a device similar to the Ouija Board, or perhaps I might explain better by saying that it is a form of automatic writing" (Jackson 187).
Response:
This quote further explains how a Planchette works. Dr. Montague explains what this is when his wife says she's going to play the game with Arthur.

And the Haunting Begins
Summary:
All throughout this section of the book more supernatural things are taking place. It was also unfolded that the house chose Eleanor out of the four of them. Eleanor keeps seeing her name in random places and it’s just her name and no one else's. She is very scared but decided to deal with it so the rest of them wouldn't make fun of her. At first Theodora started saying that Eleanor wrote her name in the hallway just to get attention and after that Eleanor started disliking Theodora. Then at night Theodora screamed and Eleanor went in there to see the room stained in red paint even though Theodora kept saying it was blood. On the wall behind her bed they also saw that Eleanor’s name was written again in the paint. Afterwards Eleanor and Theodora took a walk outside and they encountered a picnic in which there were children laughing and playing around. Then they left running because it wasn't real and they were frightened. Furthermore, towards the end of this section, Dr. Montague's wife came to stay at Hill House too with Arthur, her driver. So far no one likes her for the stuck-up attitude she's been having.
Quote:
"Can you read it? Luke asked softly, and the doctor, moving his flashlight, read slowly: Help Eleanor come home" (Jackson 146).
Response:
This quote is showing how Eleanor's name first came up in the house's hallway. As soon as Eleanor saw this she was very panicky and scared, but everyone especially Dr. Montague tried to make her feel better. Nevertheless, Theodora was just making comments in which made Eleanor get very angry. Then in Theodora's wall it said, "help Eleanor come home Eleanor" (Jackson 155). This means that Eleanor is truly wanted by the house since it basically had the same thing written in both places. The only difference is that in the second message her name was written twice and in the first message, it was written once.

The Mysteries Hill House Holds
Summary:
In this section of the book, all of the guests of Hill House are looking at the house to familiarize themselves more with it. Eleanor and Theodora are becoming closer with each other and everyone in the house looks like good friends now. While looking at the house Dr. Montague told them more about the history of the house. He said that the house was originally owned by a family but they started having trouble with each other and then the dad and mom died. Then one of the sisters was tired of her life so she went to the tower of the house and hanged herself one night. After all that happened the house became someone else's responsibility. In this section of the book there was also the first encounter with a paranormal activity. Dr. Montague and Luke were eating breakfast and they left the doors open so Theodora and Eleanor could find their way. However as soon as they were near the kitchen door closed by itself.
Qu
ote: "For myself, i would probably have anchored the rope onto the deer head in the game room, but I suppose she had some sentimental attachment to the tower; what a nice word 'attachment' is in that context, don't you think?" (Jackson 104).
Response: Theodora was the one to say this quote and she said it after hearing how the girl "tied the rope onto the iron railing and then just stepped-" (Jackson 104).

The Haunting is Soon to be Begun !
Summary:
The inhabitants finally get to the house and they start roaming around just to see where they are going to spend the summer. Theodora and Eleanor became good friends and then Luke got there and finally Dr. Montague was the last person to arrive. When everyone was there he told them to get some rest and to be careful at night. However, they didn't want to go to sleep because they wanted to hear the legend of Hill House and Dr. Montague struggled to tell them because he was afraid that they will try and leave the house and they can't leave the house because at night the house doesn't let anyone leave it. People can only leave the house in the morning before it gets dark out. Also, apparently all the tenants that been to the house and have made it out never want to talk about their experience. Dr. Montague tried to talk to some of them to see what else he can find out about the house and no one really satisfied his intrigue.
Quote:
"Without exception, every person who has spent any length of time in this house urged me to stay as far away from it as possible" (Jackson 72).
Response:
This quote further explains that many people that have been at the house leave traumatized. The house is truly haunted and now Dr. Montague, Luke, Eleanor and Theodora have to endure the adventure their about to enter.

Entering Hill House =O
Summary:
The book starts off by telling the reader the need-to-know basics in order to understand the book. It starts of by describing the four people who want to endure the adventures Hill House is to bring. The characters include Dr. John Montague, Eleanor, Theodora, Luke. Dr. Montague comes to the house just to see if he is able to find evidence of any supernatural occurrences in that house. He also invites Eleanor and Theodora to come along in his journey. Eleanor is a young lady who has a mother who died and a sister that she hates so she's basically alone in this world. Theodora in the other hand is just Dr. Montague's assistant who Dr. Montague asked for help in this investigation. Finally, the last many character, Luke is the future heir of the haunted house. They all want to be in that house for different reasons, like Eleanor wants to be there to get away from her sister and her brother-in-law which she can't stand. Theodora is there since she had a fight with her roommate and she wants to be away for some time. Then Luke is there to ensure that none of the guests will steal anything, but in fact he's just there so he can stay out of trouble according to his aunt.
Quote:
"No live organism can continue for long to exist sanely under conditions of absolute reality; even larks and katydids are supposed, by some, to dream" (Jackson 3).
Response:
I chose the first sentence in which the story was introduced in the book. Before I got my book I researched it to see if it looked like a good book to read and in fact it is. I saw this quote on most of the pages i went to so I said to myself that this quote must be very important to the book as a whole. What this quote is also trying to say is that no one can really live under what is true reality. We dream in order to make life seem as a better place for us, but in fact we're just trying to avoid what is the reality in which we live.
