Summary:
The inhabitants finally get to the house and they start roaming around just to see where they are going to spend the summer. Theodora and Eleanor became good friends and then Luke got there and finally Dr. Montague was the last person to arrive. When everyone was there he told them to get some rest and to be careful at night. However, they didn't want to go to sleep because they wanted to hear the legend of Hill House and Dr. Montague struggled to tell them because he was afraid that they will try and leave the house and they can't leave the house because at night the house doesn't let anyone leave it. People can only leave the house in the morning before it gets dark out. Also, apparently all the tenants that been to the house and have made it out never want to talk about their experience. Dr. Montague tried to talk to some of them to see what else he can find out about the house and no one really satisfied his intrigue.
Quote:
"Without exception, every person who has spent any length of time in this house urged me to stay as far away from it as possible" (Jackson 72).
Response:
This quote further explains that many people that have been at the house leave traumatized. The house is truly haunted and now Dr. Montague, Luke, Eleanor and Theodora have to endure the adventure their about to enter.

Entering Hill House =O

The book starts off by telling the reader the need-to-know basics in order to understand the book. It starts of by describing the four people who want to endure the adventures Hill House is to bring. The characters include Dr. John Montague, Eleanor, Theodora, Luke. Dr. Montague comes to the house just to see if he is able to find evidence of any supernatural occurrences in that house. He also invites Eleanor and Theodora to come along in his journey. Eleanor is a young lady who has a mother who died and a sister that she hates so she's basically alone in this world. Theodora in the other hand is just Dr. Montague's assistant who Dr. Montague asked for help in this investigation. Finally, the last many character, Luke is the future heir of the haunted house. They all want to be in that house for different reasons, like Eleanor wants to be there to get away from her sister and her brother-in-law which she can't stand. Theodora is there since she had a fight with her roommate and she wants to be away for some time. Then Luke is there to ensure that none of the guests will steal anything, but in fact he's just there so he can stay out of trouble according to his aunt.
Quote:
"No live organism can continue for long to exist sanely under conditions of absolute reality; even larks and katydids are supposed, by some, to dream" (Jackson 3).
Response:
I chose the first sentence in which the story was introduced in the book. Before I got my book I researched it to see if it looked like a good book to read and in fact it is. I saw this quote on most of the pages i went to so I said to myself that this quote must be very important to the book as a whole. What this quote is also trying to say is that no one can really live under what is true reality. We dream in order to make life seem as a better place for us, but in fact we're just trying to avoid what is the reality in which we live.
