Summary:
Angela admits to the narrator that Santiago was the one that took her virginity away, but it was weird because Angela and Santiago were never seen together. For Angela life has not been very fair, her mom beats her up a lot and her secret lover died. Pablo, her brother, also died and the family all moved to a different town. Everything was changing for Angela and she was not able to let go of the love she felt for a guy by the name of, Bayardo. She wrote one letter per week for seventeen years and sent them to him and every time her mom beat her, she cried because of the guy she loved not of the pain she felt while being hit. Nevertheless, one day while Angela is working, he appears in her work with some more weight and less hair. He puts down two suitcases which had one containing his clothes, and the other all of the letters she sent him organized by date and tied with a ribbon. What i found most surprisingly thought was that they were all unopened. Then later on in the story it is revealed that the Vicario brothers wanted to kill Santiago to respect their sister's honor since he took her virginity apparently. Santiago had no idea of what was going on and he was scared, then while walking home, the brothers stabbed him several times. However, he was still able to get up and got home and threw himself on the kitchen floor.
Quote:
"Mortally wounded three times, Santiago Nasar turned frontward again and leaned his back against his mother's door, without the slightest resistance, as if he only wanted to help them finish killing him by his own contribution" (Marquez).
Response:
I found it weird how Santiago was not resisting the Vicario brothers in any way. It makes it look as if he wanted to be killed. If it was me or any other person who wanted to live they would have done something to save themselves.

Santiago's Death :O!
Summary:
The Vicario brother's are serious about killing Santiago, they are looking for him everywhere. Even tough many know about the twin's plan to kill him, some find it hard to believe because they are known to be good people and nobody really pays any close attention to him. Colonel Lazaro Aponte then fins out about what is going on but he does nothing about it since he handled many fights the previous night. Then they are sent home with their knifes being taken away, but then they just got two new knifes and sharpened them. Pablo Vicario is also supposed to be marrying a woman by the name of Prudencia Cotes and she told him that the only reason she will marry him is beause he would not have kept his sister's honor by killing Santiago. As they left Prudencia's house, they went back to the milk shop to in which Clothilde Armenta tries to make them drunk by giving them rum, so they won't be able to do anything. Then that day Santiago appears dead and it is a mystery now especially because no one knows how he really died but everyone suspects that it was the Vicario brothers. Then they are placed in the local prison and then they were moved to the one in Riohacha.
Quote:
"Still, in reality it seemed that the Vicario brothers had done nothing right with a view to killing Santiago Nasar immediately and without any public spectacle, but had done much more than could be imagined to have someone to stop them from killing him, and they had failed" (Marquez).
Response:
This quote made me think a lot. First of all, it was in a context that made me wonder what it all meant. I put a lot of tought into it and finally i came to decide that the quote shows how no one else saw a reason into killing Santiago, but they wanted to do it either way. Therefore, no one really stopped them from killing Santiago. Or so people think they killed him.

How Santiago Was Said To Be Killed
Summary:
The book starts with the main character, Santiago Nasar waking up at 5.30 a.m. on the day he is going to be killed. He was born with his mom's sixth sense and with his dad's love of firearms. He is the only chills born into a family of convenience. As the first few pages of the book went on, it is stated that everyone know about Santiago's death. Apparently two men were waiting to kill him on this day and they were waiting for him at the local milk shop. The two men, Pedro Vicario and Pablo Vicario were in their wedding suits and with knifes who had newspaper around them and this was when everyone was going into the boat. Even though many knew of his death, others thought Santiago was not in any danger and everyone knew about what was going on except for Santiago. Luisa, Margot's mother who finds out that Angela Vicario is sent home because she is not a virgin anymore, wants to tell Placida about what is going to happen to Santiago, but someone else comes and tells her that Santiago has already been killed. It is also believed that Santiago had something to do with the whole Angela incident of being sent back home.
Quote:
"On the day they were going to kill him, Santiago Nasar got up at five-thirty in the morning to wait for the boat the bishop was coming on" (Marquez).
Response:
This quote is the opening sentence to the book. It shows foreshadowing and makes the reader wonder how and why was Santiago going to be killed. This is a great hook to involve the reader into the book and it leaves many question. A good author will leave the reader curious until the end.
